We represented a young female defendant accused of conspiracy to kidnap, linked to alleged global drugs importation. The allegations were part of a wider investigation by the National Crime Agency (NCA) into organised criminal gang activity involving the large-scale importation of drugs into the UK.

Our client faced serious allegations of involvement in a conspiracy to kidnap a victim who was tortured and raped by others. The trial lasted six weeks and required careful consideration of complex factual and legal issues, including examination of investigative material and digital evidence.

Our approach

We addressed several critical issues, including cross-examination of the complainant and scrutiny of the police investigation. Our legal arguments covered the admissibility of evidence and bad character material.

We instructed independent experts from Cyfor, who provided cell site and handset analysis. We also scrutinised social media communications, including Instagram, Snapchat, Telegram, WhatsApp and TikTok communications.

Throughout the trial, we carefully reviewed all evidence and disclosure. We made further disclosure requests and ensured that the proceedings were conducted fairly so that our client’s interests were fully represented.

The outcome

After a four-week trial and a one-day closing submission, our client was acquitted within one day of jury deliberations.
